As it turned out, there were quite a few deals yesterday as the 2014 NHL Trade Deadline passed, yet few of them were major.
There were no deals involving the Toronto Maple Leafs (thank God), and no more deals involving the Vancouver Canucks (I am sure Ryan Kesler is as pissed off as it gets, as he apparently demanded a trade out of town).
And the Pittsburgh Penguins stayed out of the spotlight on deadline day, somewhat out of the norm for them. GM Ray Shero has been known for making moves galore on the final trade day of the season.
The biggest deals involved the two players who were swapped for each other back in October (Matt Moulson and Thomas Vanek) and this is going to please the Habs fans out there.
Here is a look at each deal made yesterday:
Vanouver sends Luongo back to Florida with Steven Anthony for Jacob Markstrom and Shawn Matthias
***Tampa Bay trades Martin St. Louis to NY Rangers for Ryan Callahan, their 1st round draft pick in 2015 and a conditional 2nd round pick this year that becomes a 1st in NY makes it to the Eastern Conference final. Apparently the Ranger’s attempts to re-sign Callahan broke down due to the no-trade clause; Callahan wanted one, the Rangers said no. Callahan would become an unrestricted free agent after the season. Interesting in this was that St. Louis got on a plane fast enough to fly to NY and play against the Leafs tonight, and guess who won? Yep, the Leafs! haha.
Florida trades Marcel Goc to Pittsburgh for a 5th round draft pick.
Chicago sends a 2nd round draft pick to Phoenix for 2 guys
Edmonton sends Illya Bryzgalov to the Wild for someone, despite Brodeur nearly going
Washington trades Martin Erat to Phoenix
Buffalo trades Brayden McNabb to LA Kings for 2 prospects
Nashville trades Devan Dubnyk gets traded to Montreal
Edmonton trades Ales Hemsky to Ottawa for 5th and 3rd round draft pick
Edmonton trades Nick Schultz to Columbus for draft picks
Florida trades Tim Thomas to Dallas for Dan Ellis
Vancouver trades Raphael Diaz to NY Rangers for a 5th round draft pick
Flyers trade Andrej meszaros to Boston for 3rd round pick
Calgary trades G Reto Berra to Avalanche for a draft pick
Nashville trades F david legwand to Detroit
***Buffalo trades Matt Moulson to Minnesota and F Cody McCormick for F Torey Mitchell and draft picks
***NY Islanders trade Thomas Vanek and conditional 5th round draft pick to Montreal for a 2nd round draft pick and a prospect (Sebastian Collberg). Apparently, this deal came into the NHL office at the very last second and involves the most expensive contract of the day (Vanek’s is worth over $7M).
***Sabres trade Jaroslav Halak and 3rd round pick to Washington for Michal Neuvirth and Rotislav Klesla
Calgary trades F Lee Stempniak to Pittsburgh for a 3rd round draft pick
***Columbus trades Marian Gaborik to LA Kings for Matt Frattin and 2 draft picks. The Kings are hoping that Gaborik will help to jumpstart their offense. Gaborik hasn’t jumpstarted anyone’s offense since his rookie year in this league! What makes the Kings think he is going to hop-to with them???
IN THE END
In the end, Martin Brodeur is still a goalie for the New Jersey Devils, Ryan Kesler remains a center for the Vancouver Canucks, Mike Cammalleri is still with the Calgary Flames, and Paul Stastny will be sticking around with the Colorado Avalanche for the time being. Four of the biggest names discussed in rumors over the past several days did not get dealt before the NHL Trade Deadline at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
