It took 30 players in the shootout before Jay McClement finally scored in round 15 and the Maple Leafs took a 3-2 come-from-behind win at the First Niagara Centre in Buffalo tonight.
The two clubs meet again tomorrow night at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
This game had a little bit of everything, timely saves at both ends, a couple of scraps, and 30 penalty shots.
Leaf defenceman Paul Ranger’s was the best. Don’t know what Coach Carlyle said to Ranger before his shot, but it’s the only time I ever saw Carlyle breaking up on the bench. He thought it was funny. Actually hilarious. I think everybody did.
Ranger tried that fancy-ass shit that those showboats try when the time is right. I don’t know if the time was right here, Buffalo nearly won it on the next shot then Ranger woulda felt stupid, but oh well.
He kicked his stick with the puck the blade and the puck hit the goalie in the chest. The puck did not go in but apparently it was funny anyways.
Anywho, about 10 shooters later, McClement won the game when he beat Jhonas Enroth. Other than the McClement goal, both goalies were like brick walls. McClement also tied the game for Toronto with 4:37 left in the 3rd period.
The loss was Buffalo’s first of the pre-season. The Leafs 3-2 win over the Senators on Thursday night was the Sens’ first loss too.
Leaf keeper James Reimerstopped all 15 Buffalo shooters and made 38 saves in regulation.
Buffalo went up 1-0 at 10:20 of the second when defenceman Mark Pysyk beat Reimer over his left shoulder.
The Sabres doubled their advantage just over two minutes later when Marcus Foligno finished off a 2-on-1 through Reimer’s legs.
The Sabres outshot Toronto in the first period, 17-10, and 41-34 overall.
Toronto’s next game is tomorrow night against the Sabres at the ACC. Game time is 7pm.
