Apparently Detriot rap star Eminem did not curse his team during the opening weekend of the National Football League season.
Anyone following the NCAA Div I matchup last Saturday night at Michigan Stadium between Michigan and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish may have gotten a glimpse of a very brief halftime show in the espn broadcast booth.
Host Brent Musberger and co-host Kirk Herbstreithad him on briefly, apparently to promote his new album which is called the MMLP2.
One of the questions Musberger had for him was the final score and winner of the Detroit Lions season opener which they played, and beat the Minnesota Vikings, 34-24.
I don’t want to jinx them or nothing, but I hope they win for sure, the rapper replied.
Against the Vikes, QB Matthew Stafford had 357 passing yards, newly-acquired RB Reggie Bush had a 77-yard run for a touchdown, and the Detroit defence held Adrian Peterson to 93 yards on the ground.
Fans of the Detroit NFL club haven’t had a whole lot to get excited about over the years, but apparently now there are a couple things that are looking good.
Detroit’s next game takes them to the University of Phoenix Stadium for a game against the Cardinals.
Four-year veteran QB Matt Stafford, newly-acquired running back Reggie Bush whom they signed 2 weeks ago after he spent the last 2 years in Miami and 5 before that in New Orleans, another newcomer in running back from the University of Notre Dame’s national title run last year, 22-year-old in Theo Riddick, and that is all on top of WR Calvin Johnson, who has been the lone name on the Lions defence until Stafford was drafted out of Georgia.
Anyways, things were looking pretty good for the Lions on draft day, then it got even better when the team managed to sign one of the game’s most explosive running backs, in Reggie Bush.
Reggie Bush said it wasn’t a tough decision at all to sign with the Detroit Lions.
“I got about two to three hours of sleep (that) night, I was up, I was thinking about all the possibilities,” said Bush who wound up signing a 4-year deal worth $16M.
“I look forward to winning a lot of football games here.”
The 27-year-old Bush was targeted by the Lions for many reasons. With Jahvid Best out of action for the last year and a half, the running game has struggled and therefore put more pressure on the passing game.
Running backs Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell didn’t provide the explosiveness needed to keep the offense balanced enough.
“We had a sore need for explosive runs on offense, we were last in NFL in explosive runs last year,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said.
Bush was a good fit for their needs.
“The thing that was important for us was not just the talents of Reggie Bush, but also the way those talents complement other players on offense, notably Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford,” Schwartz added.
“It’s a running back’s dream. It’s the first thing we talked about when we’re watching film and to see those safeties deep and to see the safeties rolling over, double-coveraging Calvin Johnson, it’s a running back’s dream,” Bush said.
Despite having suffered a dislocated thumb and pulled groin during that season opener against the Vikes, Bush was not held back in the first drills of the week.
This came after the veteran running back racked up 191 yards from scrimmage, including a 77-yard touchdown reception, in Detroit’s 34-24 win over the Minnesota Vikings..
Of course he will be expected to contribute this weekend against Arizone; if Bush plays the way he usually does, he will probably blow those Week 1 numbers out of the water altogether.
Detroit is expected to be a great fit for Bush, provided they don’t lean on him too much. That is where an established guy like Calvin Johnson should carry his load. In the pass-happy NFL, I still expect Stafford to air it out to Johnson. While at running back, if the Lions really felt like that was what they really needed in draft day, then that is what they went out and got, in the form of 22-year-old Theo Riddick out of Notre Dame.
In his final year at Notre Dame, Riddick returned to his natural position of RB after having played at WR in 2010, he played in all 13 ND games and started 8 games. He led ND with 190 carries for 917 yards, added five rushing TDs and had a team-best 1287 all purpose yards.
He also proved that he could handle the entire spotlight in the world when ND made the NCAA national title game, catching one of his team’s 2 touchdown passes against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
FINALLY SOME RESPECT?
No longer are Detroit’s other sports teams taking a back seat to the NHL’s Red Wings. The Tigers baseball team has been hitting home runs lately. Detroit is currently 6.5 into first place in the AL Central with a record of 84-62; even better for Detroit baseball fans, they are 44-27 when playing in the comfy confines of Comerica Park.
Obviously, being only 1 week into American football, there is only so much that could happen one way or the other but the Lions did look good in their win over the Minnesota Vikings, which puts them and Chicago into the top half of the NFC North heading into Sunday’s games.
Tonight is a battle of the AFC East so that won’t have any effect on the Lions’ standing.
